Tempest Rising – Back to the Glorious Era of Classic RTS

A game that will touch the hearts of RTS fans.

What is Tempest Rising?

Tempest Rising is a modern real-time strategy (RTS) game that draws inspiration from classic series like Command & Conquer, StarCraft, and Red Alert. The game was released in April 2025 and was developed by Slipgate Ironworks and published by 3D Realms, the same legendary team that previously worked on Duke Nukem 3D.

The game features a distinctly nostalgic atmosphere, modern visuals, and old-school, dynamic gameplay that will always delight old-school RTS fans.

Tempest Rising Story – After World War

Tempest Rising takes place in an alternate future where humanity is barely surviving after World War III. The planet is devastated, resources are almost nonexistent… However, a mysterious energy plant called Tempest has appeared, which is slowly becoming the dominant resource. It is around this plant that new battles for power begin.

There are two main factions to fight:

  • GDF (Global Defense Forces) – the “forces of good” who are trying to maintain order.
  • Tempest Dynasty – a mystical and brutal group with its own vision of a new world order.

The story is full of tension, political potential, and characters who are neither black nor white – everything a good RTS needs.

Tempest Rising Gameplay – Speed, Strategy and Tactics

Tempest Rising is built on the basis of old-school strategy, which means that resource gathering, base building and army management are the main things here. No fancy auto-fights – you manage everything yourself.

Key mechanics:

  • Building an independent base and upgrading structures;
  • Unique units for each faction (mechs, drones, chemical weapons, etc.);
  • Collecting energy resources – specifically Tempest mining and conversion;
  • Multi-front battles – attack, defense and control of resources at the same time;
  • Strong AI opponent that strategically reacts to your actions.

Added to all this is an impressive single-player campaign across two factions, as well as skirmish and multiplayer modes where PvP fans will immerse themselves in tactical warfare for hours.

Graphics

Tempest Rising uses Unreal Engine 4, which gives its visuals a modern look, but still retains the old-school style – as if C&C: Generals and Tiberian Sun had entered into a marriage.

Flexible animations, colorful maps and effective explosions;

An atmosphere that conveys the apocalyptic nature of the world;

Highly detailed units and environments;

Dynamic damage to buildings and realistic damage.

In short – the graphics are not AAA, but they are exactly what RTS loves.

Technical Details and Engine

Pros and Cons

Final Verdict

Tempest Rising isn’t just an RTS game — it’s a throwback to the old strategic era, where tactics and management were everything. If you miss the rumble of tanks, the explosion of bases, and the slow-building of strategic victories — this is the game for you.

It offers an experience inspired by classic gameplay without being outdated. The graphics, balance, and faction diversity create a truly worthwhile experience for RTS fans.
